New consultation invites residents to help shape the future of central Portishead

North Somerset Council and the Wyndham Way Study Area Steering Group have today launched a new consultation, seeking feedback from all those who live and work in the town on a new illustrative masterplan for central Portishead, which sets out guidance for how the area could develop over the next 15 years.
A summary of the illustrative masterplan has been published on the Wyndham Way website detailing a draft framework for potential future development. The document considers the future of the area of central Portishead between the High Street, the Marina and the planned new MetroWest railway station. The consultation is led by North Somerset Council working with Portishead Town Council and key land owners and with extensive local consultation.

The illustrative masterplan focuses on gradual and flexible evolution that showcases how the Wyndham Way Area might develop in the period until 2038, including planning to enable:
  • A connected network of streets and routes which enables walking, cycling and transport links across the area, linking the town centre with Portishead's planned MetroWest railway station and the marina
  • The creation of new industrial and creative workspace and parking to help maintain the industrial heart of the Wyndham Way area, and transform areas currently dominated by surface car parks
  • New homes, community facilities and infrastructure across the Wyndham Way Study Area
  • Enhancing and connecting green spaces along the Rhyne to enrich the green corridor which runs through the heart of the area
  • Setting out guiding principles to encourage improvements to Portishead's Cabstand Junction and deliver a new transport hub along Wyndham Way
A spokesperson for the Wyndham Way Study Area Steering Group said:

“This is an important moment for Portishead. The future development of the area around Wyndham Way represents a key opportunity to plan for the town to evolve in a sustainable way and enable better connections linking the town centre with Portishead's planned MetroWest railway station and the marina.

“Today, we are launching the consultation on our illustrative masterplan for central Portishead, which is itself a response to the conversations we have been having with local people since 2020. The document sets out a flexible roadmap for future development in this part of the town.

“We want to hear from as many people as possible what they think of our suggested solutions to the issues raised in the consultation. The feedback we receive this summer will inform the final version of our illustrative masterplan for central Portishead, which will be published in the autumn.”

The consultation questionnaire on the Wyndham Way website remains open until 4 November at 5pm. The consultation also includes a public event, offering the chance to discuss the illustrative plan with the project team. The event takes place on 13 October from 3pm to 7pm, at Portishead Library, Horatio House, 24 Harbour Road, Portishead, BS20 7AL.

The Wyndham Way Study Area Steering Group includes North Somerset Council, Portishead Town Council, abrdn plc and local businesses, working together to consider and explore how the Wyndham Way Study Area could be improved to benefit the people of Portishead. For more, see https://wyndhamway.co.uk/
